Sublime e sua utópica história começou em 1986, quando os amigões Brad Nowell e Eric Wilson, criaram uma banda em Long Beach, CA. Brad na guitarra, Eric no baixo e mais Bud Gaugh na bateria e nos samplers. Brad havia já tido um contato com o reggae anos antes e levou a influência ao som do grupo, que misturava ainda altas doses de ska, hip hop, punk, funk, surf music e rock.
O começo da banda foi bem parecido com outras surgidas na Califórnia. Os amigos adoram, o pessoal da universidade idem, e o Sublime ia se tornando a banda mais popular do campus. Os caras vão levando aquela vida de sonho: bebendo com os camaradas, fumando uns baseados, surfando, tirando um som com todo o pessoal na praia e gravando as primeiras fitas.
A banda é uma verdadeira família. Todos são amigos, Opie Ortiz (tattooador e artista - um dos vocais do extinto Long Beach Dub All Stars) desenha uns logos, outro ajuda em uma letra, e as bandas amigas, como The Ziggens, No Doubt, Filibuster, Slightly Stoopid e Happoldts (banda de um grande amigo de Brad, Miguel) estão sempre presentes dando um apoio e uma canjinha. O Sublime faz muitos shows em pequenos espaços até chamar atenção de cada vez mais pessoas e rádios universitárias locais.
Em 1992, o grupo gravou o primeiro disco oficial, "40. Oz of Freedom", por um selo independente, o Skunk Records. A maioria das composições é do próprio Brad e conta com 2 covers: We’re Only Gonna Die, do Bad Religion, e Hope, do Descendents. As vendas foram boas para o formato independente, com 30 mil cópias só nos shows. Foi na época da turnê deste disco que Brad começou a se viciar em heroína.
O vício começou a dar problemas após o lançamento do segundo disco, "Robbin' The Hood". A música Date Rape (originalmente gravado por menos de 1000 dólares e considerada um clássico) tocou muito em rádio local e chamou atenção da MCA Records, mas no dia da negociação do contrato, Brad chegou bêbado e drogado com seu cachorro, que defecou na sala... Mas mesmo assim foi assinado o contrato.
Em "Robbin' the Hood", algumas musicas mostram claramente o sofrimento de Bradley na luta contra a heroína. Em Pool Shark, ele diz: "Um dia perderei a guerra...", e quem já o viu cantando essa música afirma que a expressão em seu rosto era de dor. Com esses dois álbuns lançados, a banda seguia bem na escalada para o sucesso, mas a vida de Brad continuava muito instável...
Em 1995, o grupo começou a gravação do terceiro álbum, o clássico "Sublime". Produzido pelo lendário surfista Paul Leary, o álbum mesclava reggae, ska, psicodelismo, influências de Hendrix e punk/ hardcore do começo dos anos 80. Um disco realmente memorável e vendeu impressionantes 4 milhões de cópias.
No meio da produção, Brad teve o filho Jakob James Nowell e os problemas com o vício em heroína pioraram. Com isso, em 1996 ele decidiu se internar em uma clínica de reabilitação durante seis meses. Em maio daquele ano, ele se casou com a mãe de seu filho, Troy Dendekker e sem direito à lua de mel, Brad caiu na estrada iniciou a turnê com o Sublime.
Sete dias depois do casamento, Brad foi encontrado morto no quarto do hotel por overdose de heroína. Naquele dia ele acordou cedo, cheio de disposição, e foi levar Louie, seu inseparável dálmata para dar uma volta na praia. Foi a última vez que todo mundo o viu. Brad perdeu a guerra. Os integrantes da banda decidiram que não dava para continuar a tocar no Sublime sem Brad e colocaram um fim nas atividades. Em 1997 Bud e Eric formaram o grupo Long Beach Dub AllStars e continuaram até o ano de 2002.
E atualmente claro hoje estão na ativa a todo vapor com a Sublime With Rome, com o novo vocalista Rome e os menbros originais Eric e Bud. Retomando as atividades em shows e turnês no mundo inteiro.
E Sublime hoje em dia é a influência primordial no sentido de uma banda hoje ser original, entender o que é um feeling musical e uma total originalidade na idéia de fusão de ritmos, improviso e musicalidade. Juntando todos esses ingredientes a histórias bem humoradas, relatos de difíceis momentos da vida e outras histórias insanas, cerveja, drogas, festas, amigos...
